The Blue Letter Bible

TECHNIQUE
Each word found in the Bible was given a number by a man called Mr. Strong, so that others could know what the Hebrew of Greek word was that is being translated. To understand more, click here for the helpful explanation from the Blue Letter Bible website.

WARNING!
We must take care how we use the information we gain about the meanings of Hebrew or Greek words.  Be careful how you compare the use of one word found in different places. A word always means what the author wanted it to mean in the context (surround) of the sentences around it. Avoid building a huge argument on the shaky foundation of limited knowledge of Hebrew and Greek words. The truth is more than words - it gives life. Also, try not to fall into the trap of impressing others with what you know!

ENCOURAGEMENT
It is good, however, if we expand our knowledge in humility. Our desire must be that we grow in our understanding and love for God's ways. Psalm 67 says just that: "May God be gracious to us.....that your ways may be known..." All the words in the Bible were understood by the readers at the time they were written, so when you pass on what you have learnt, rather than confuse your listeners with your new knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, explain what you have learnt using simple words that they understand!

ADVANTAGES
The dictionary gives you the stem  word (main word or lemma). You can read about the wealth of meaning of the word. If you use the dictionary regularly, you can begin to recognise important theme words (thematic words) in the Bible, like "salvation" both in Greek (4991) and in Hebrew (3444).  All Hebrew words can be linked to a root word - this one is from the root word to save (3467)

But don't forget in all this - the best way to know the meaning of such Bible words is to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ and experience yourself how God intended you to live! If you think you can't live how God intended you to, you are right! Look up what Jesus means (Greek 2424 Hebrew 3091) and see how he came to help us. The words of an angel explaining how he helps us are in Matthew 1:21 (or look for the verse 21 here: Linked Word Project).

DISADVANTAGES
Knowing the stem of the word does not tell you about any additions at the beginning or end of the word, for example "the", "we", "his". Nor does it tell you anything about the tense (past, present, future etc.), which also changes the form of the word, both in ancient Greek and Hebrew. The best way to understand that is to learn the language!

What is a Bible Concordance?A Bible Concordance is a book (in this case, an electronic book), which has a list of key words of the Bible listed from A to Z. Under the word is a list of the verses where these words are found.

If English is not your first language,
but you understand some English, you can still use an electronic concordance. Here are some ways:
1.

Go to the Bible Gateway website and see if it has a Bible translation available in your language. If so, you will be able to search for verses in it and even for words! If your language is not available on internet, try 2. or 3. below
2.

Look it up in an English dictionary (perhaps you will find one on internet  - try www.yourdictionary.com): and type this word in "Search by Keyword"
3.
Find the word you are looking for in one verse in the Bible, in your language.  Then find the same verse in English using the boxes "Book, Chapter, Verse Range", Next find the English word for the word in your language in that verse. Put that English word in the box "Phrase Search / Concordance" and press Search.
